In Italy, citizens from other Member States have the option of keeping their driver’s licence from their country of origin or of switching to an Italian driving licence (website available in Italian or German). In either case, Italian provisions such as terms of validity, medical checks, and other requirements still apply. If your country of origin is outside the European Union, you must switch to an Italian licence after one year of residency (website available in Italian and German). If the licence from the country of origin is not recognised, an Italian driving exam is mandatory.
You can get more information at the department of driver’s licences (website available in Italian and German).
